PROJECT: Webster

An old garage is replaced by a new ADU, and art and old treasures are repurposed to give birth to a new garden.

Cor-ten steel raised garden beds surround the patio for the main gathering space and a small intimate patio is tucked away for the ADU. Both patios have angular shapes for a modern, yet organic feel, and an efficient use of space.

Bricks and a sentimental collection of ceramic art and stones were repurposed for a gabion bench with redwood top. The bench is generously sized for daytime naps. The same brick is used in a short walkway around the corner where the irrigation and lighting controls are hidden from view. Elsewhere, art is displayed amongst plants.

Accent lights and path lights are there to make sure the garden is enjoyable no matter what time it is. The main house and ADU have separate dimmable light switches which gives both residents control of the ambiance.

Secondary pathways are made of geometric basalt stepping stones in gold granite gravel. Also made of basalt, a stone water fountain provides for pollinators and birds. The design was influenced by the client’s love of their cottage at Sea Ranch. California native plants are intermixed with exotics for year-round interest and to blend styles with an existing and beloved mature Japanese Maple.
