PROJECT: Virginia

A sweet young family makes this home β€œtheirs” with a full property renovation.

We were initially brought on by the architect who reimagined this home to handle the softscape, but we couldn’t keep from sticking our nose into the design of the hardscape and are so glad that we did! We helped the homeowners select a contemporary set of linear pavers to compliment the home’s new modern feel, and also kept the hardscape permeable. We then dreamed up a paver pattern and layout to give the generous back patio, driveway and walkways distinction.

The front, with its local boulders and gravel, was designed to be a dry garden. The plant palette puts foliage and form first while not leaving out something for our pollinators. It invites a lot of interest from passersby asking, β€œis that cactus real?”. In contrast, the back garden is a little more colorful, fun and personal. The back garden is separated primarily into two spaces by an oversized stone step flanked by garden bed bookends. This pulls the garden into the patio and also create buffered spaces. Both the stone step and cobblestone edging help loosen things up, lending a natural feel to the garden. Large sleek pottery adds punctuation for the hardscape. We even snuck in a couple cor-ten steel planters for herbs and greens.
